Air Max 95: 30 Years of Visible Air

Three decades after it dropped, the Air Max 95 is still one of the most recognisable sneakers ever made. In SA it's got its own nickname, its own culture, and a permanent spot in the rotation. Here's why the 95 keeps winning.

Air Max 95: 30 Years of Visible Air

The 110s

In South Africa you don't say \"Air Max 95\" — you say 110s, after the old £110 UK price tag that stuck as a nickname across the sneaker world. The layered panels were inspired by the human body: muscle fibres in the overlays, a spine down the midsole, ribs on the lace loops. No other sneaker looks like it because no other sneaker was designed like it.

It was also the first Air Max with visible Air you could see from the front — two bubble units in the forefoot, not just the heel. Thirty years later the tech still holds up for all-day wear.

The Neon that started it all

The original Neon — grey gradients with that volt yellow-green hit — is one of the most famous colourways in sneaker history. It broke the rule that running shoes had to be white, and it's still the pair collectors chase.

Today's Big Bubble editions bring the original shape back with the larger Air window the '95 heads remember. Alongside the Neon, the colourways moving in SA: Black Total Orange, Triple White, the Corteiz collabs and the earthy Cargo Khaki tones.

How to wear 95s

The 95 is a bulky silhouette, so balance it: straight or relaxed-fit pants, never skinny. Tech fleece and track pants are the natural pairing — this is a comfort sneaker at heart. Dark colourways disappear into winter fits; the Neons and whites are for when you want the shoes noticed first.
